What on earth actually is SEO and why the heck do you need it!?
We don’t need to over complicate things like most people do. Let’s just keep things simple and easy.
I am going to break down exactly what SEO is, why you need it and then how to do it.
There are so many moving parts to having a successful online presence, right?!!
We totally get it that sometimes (or all the time) it can be really overwhelming and loads of things that you don’t even understand.
Well today I am going to try to have some fun with educating you around SEO while in Gold Coast sitting in my office overlooking the ocean. There, that visual already makes SEO more exciting!
And… if you are looking for someone to do SEO on the Gold Coast for you, we can help there too.
So with the white sandy Gold Coast beach in mind, let’s start with what SEO actually stands for.
Search Engine Optimisation. Ohh what lovely digital geeky mouthful!
What exactly does that mean you ask!? Well if you have a website you really need that website to be seen. So when people type into the Google ‘search engine’ any words that relate to your business, we want your website to come up. Which means that it has been ‘optimised’ properly for that to happen.
I will share more about how you can do that further down this page.
Ok, stay focused on SEO in the Gold Coast beach, you’re doing good! Keep reading.
What can SEO do for you?
The whole idea of investing in SEO for your website is to get you seen. There are various things that you can do which I will cover in the SEO tips below, so that when people search for a business like you that you come up at the top (or at least on the 1st page) of the options Google lists.
What does this mean, well, when you are on Google searching, how many times do you even bother to go to page 2? Almost never right.
Page 2 is like being in the dark corners of the ibis of the internet black hole… which is not where you want to be! You want to be on the first page so people click on you. Page 1 is like having your SEO in Gold Coast, it’s takes you to the beautiful white sandy beaches, everyone wants to be there!
So basically, SEO is a long term game to get seen online. And you will see why I say long term when you read the ways to implement SEO below.
Now don’t be scared when I say long term, there are benefits of playing the long term game. Not only do you get seen, but you get seen as the expert in your field and your customers will get to know, love and trust you just by implementing the suggestions below.
In turn, this creates lasting customers that just keep coming back time and time again to buy from you. Which I might add, is a much easier model than trying to continuously acquire and work with brand new customers. Sure you need new customers consistently, but returning customers will spend more and more with you because you have built that trust, by hopefully exceeding their expectations with your product or service.
How can you improve your SEO?
Here are some ways that you can improve your chances of being seen:
Make sure the usability of your site is up to scratch. If someone lands on your website and it is hard to navigate, they will leave, giving you a high ‘bounce rate’ which Google does not like and will lower your score that Google keeps on your site. So first things first. Make sure you have a great website before trying to implement any SEO strategy.
Give valuable, regular and consistent information to your viewers in the way of blogs that you upload to your website. Make sure this is content that your target market will actually be searching for. Make sure you are real about what you share and don’t make anything up. People will see through that in no time. So build your reputation up over time with things that you know and share as you learn and grow.
Collaborate with other people who have a similar target market to you. Maybe you can do an interview podcast or a written blog and have the person you are collaborating with share the link on their website to link to yours. Google will give you a higher ranking for this. It is called ‘BackLinks.’
When writing content for blogs, make sure you focus each blog on one keyword phrase. Use this keyword phrase throughout your written blog numerous times so that when you post it to your website and someone searches Google for the keyword you have focused on, you are likely to come up in the search.
How Google Measures:
Ok, how are you doing? Still with me? Still visualising the SEO Gold Coast bliss!? We are on the home run and then you can go away and start optimising your website.
So Google measures by doing a few things:
The term ‘Pogo Sticking’ is one of the ways they measure how awesome your site is..or not. This is when someone lands on your site and then they jump around from article to article, page to page, looking but not finding what they want and then leaving. Google sees this as your site not having what the viewer is looking for or not having good enough content to make them stay and read.
Article length. Your articles should be at least 750 words long. This way you are seen to have put some real effort into educating your viewers.
Your click through rate. Which is when someone clicks on your article, stays, reads, clicks through to an offer or something else on the page, stays, reads….etc.
Clean formatting and organisation of the article.
Do not try to over monitise your articles with ads and affiliate links to try to always sell your reader something. It is not about that all the time. It is about educating viewers.
Your article needs to answer the reader’s question quickly and thoroughly, and then go on to offer further interesting information. Don’t try to drag things out to make your viewer stay, that’s just annoying.
Ok, that’s enough SEO talk for me, back to the Gold Coast sun, sand and surf! 🙂
